Musings on Christian faith

This blog is not theological treatise, but the discussions I'm having with myself and others about living out our faith in the modern world. The views of the writings are strictly my own, unless otherwise stated.

Now is the time for all good men

What is the meaning of this oft quoted series- now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party. For all of the old political parties, the meaning is obvious. The walls of simplicity, fear and bungling, need to be decried, and destroyed. The party faithful must come and help bring down these walls - to build up the party. So the political party, of whatever stripe, must raise up to the defence of it's own future. There are forces at work that will bring down the party, and cause it to lose relevance, and those party faithful must come to it's aid by bringing funds and positions and people, to help it survive the calamities of the current time. Many people read these lines in a typing class and forget the meaning of what they are typing. This happens in many endeavors in life. A phrase is repeated over and over again, with the intent of creating a meaningful phrase, when in reality people forget it's purpose and just repeat ad infinitum. Just as in former days people repeated the Lord's prayer or the Te Deum or Lent or Whitsunday or even the Apostle's Creed - all of these had a particular meaning and purpose, but against all odds, it was forgotten. It's purpose was forgotten, just as many forgot the purpose of the original typing quote - come to the aid of the party. It's original purpose was to rally the party faithful and to aid the typist in using all of the letters. How quickly we forget purpose and meaning. If we forget to pray for Jerusalem and to support it, how quickly our prayers become just words with no meaning and no action behind them. If we forget God and just parrot the prayers without knowing or understanding their meaning; we are losing something by just speaking the words. We must not say the words but think of the attendant purpose - which is to rally us to action. As James says, in scripture - "Faith without works; is dead." Just as, saying we need to love without loving; is dead. Just as, saying we need to give; without giving; is dead. Just as praying the Lords prayer without living the Kingdom; is dead. Parroting words does not make a prayer anymore than giving a card with platitudes is dead. Love is action, prayer is action. worship is action, Christian living is action, studying scripture is action. Now is the time for all Good Christians to live like a Christian; life in action.
